Wawa for Gluten-Free Finds

Wawa has everything!  Gas, quick snacks, coffee, hot meals.  If you’re from the area you probably share my affinity for Wawa.  Best of all, for the gluten-free eater, you can go beyond the bag of chips for a quick snack.  They offer hot foods like gluten-free chili, deli meats, and tasty drinks.

Below is what the response I received from a Wawa representative regarding gluten-free food in their stores or go to the Quick Gluten Free References page:

  1. Are your new specialty cappuccinos and lattes gluten free?

  2. I used to work at Wawa and there’s absolutely no way that the deli selections are safe (due to cross-contamination). It’s good to know about the grab and go items, but I wouldn’t trust anything from behind the deli counter.

    • Thank you so much for your insight and experience. Cross contamination is always an issue with all gluten-free foods, and whenever considering foods that are not personally prepared I always recommend asking how it was processed and if cross contamination is an issue. If there are any doubts I pass on the option.

  3. I just checked their site…looks like they have changed ingredients on at least one item…their chili now contains wheat. 😦 And, unfortunately, they don’t list allergens for all of their items…so one can only assume they contain gluten.

  4. Wawa Chili contains soy sauce, which contains wheat.

  5. I see that the mashed potatoes are gluten free. Is the gravy also gluten free? I’m particularly curious about the gravy in the turkey bowl. Thanks!

    • Hi Jill. I would check with Wawa Corporate and also the local store to see how they handle the product and how it interacts with the rest of the kitchen. I have not followed up with their product offerings in quite some time and it would be best to ask them directly. I’m sorry I can’t offer an answer but I don’t want you to take any chances, especially when it comes to gravy. Aside from the gravy (and if it contains gluten) cross-contamination is always something to look into.
